Who Is Your Favorite Female Rock n' Roller?
Welcome to the International Women's Day edition of Mike's Music Morning
This post is being made on International Women’s Day (3/8/23), during Women’s History Month. As I discussed with
, while I understand the sentiment, every month is Women’s History Month, if you think about it.Ain’t nobody on this spinning ball of mud ever been birthed by a dude. ‘Nuff said.
This one might run a little long, but I think it’s totally worth it. Oh, and thanks to my pal,
for filling in for me yesterday. I have an old shoulder injury that flares up from time to time. It sucks getting old, but it’s better than the alternative.Starting off with “The Queen of Rock and Roll” today, and because I’m the movie buff that I am, I chose this little ditty from “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome”
Tina Turner
Janis Joplin
Unmistakable vocals from this woman. Gone too soon, like so many others.
Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks
This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums (Rumours). I actually like this live version a lot too. The fact that it was Star-Lord’s fight music in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is just icing. Also, Taylor Swift has nothing on Stevie when it comes to writing and performing songs about her ex. Stevie got hers to play guitar while she bitched at him HAHAHAHA
The Eurythmics/Annie Lennox
Not only did this woman kick ass back in the 80’s with this next tune, she also did the closing credits for Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King”. Desert island book/movie series for me.
Blondie
Runaways
Speaking of Joan Jett:
Heart
The Go-Go’s
The Bangles
The Pretenders
The B-52’s
Alanis Morissette
Evanescence
Pat Benatar
Okay, ran really long, and could keep going, but still worth it. I know I’ve left out a lot of amazing rock musicians, but we could be here all day. Women have made incredible contributions to every genre of music. And to the history of the world.
Good morning from Western Wishes.

If You Formed a Rock Supergroup From Anyone in History, Who's on the Roster?
One great one is PJ Harvey. A lot of hard rock riffs met with some consistently excellent lyricism.
"Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" and "Let England Shake" are two great albums. Her other stuff is good too. She kind of started off kind of on the grunge side of things in the 90s and just got better from there.
I would also mention Florence and the Machine as a good example of some excellent female led contemporary band.
I've recently been discovering how much great stuff Blondie has. As excellent as "Heart of Glass" and "Call Me" are, I would say this is the band's masterpiece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pF0H8-ktoA
