One great one is PJ Harvey. A lot of hard rock riffs met with some consistently excellent lyricism.

"Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" and "Let England Shake" are two great albums. Her other stuff is good too. She kind of started off kind of on the grunge side of things in the 90s and just got better from there.

I would also mention Florence and the Machine as a good example of some excellent female led contemporary band.

I've recently been discovering how much great stuff Blondie has. As excellent as "Heart of Glass" and "Call Me" are, I would say this is the band's masterpiece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pF0H8-ktoA

I couldn't begin to pick a favorite Blondie tune, and Debbie gets regular play on all my media outlets (still have my mothers vinyl!). I'd add Bjork to this list though, even if she doesn't necessarily qualify as "rock" on her own.

I adore Bjork and really need to do a post on her. I listed her as one of the artists I regard the best of Gen-X.

I always liked Heart and Linda Ronstadt.

I think my favorite of these is definitely Janis Joplin. She was a machine in her musical output. The only other ones which I feel like you missed are Gwen Stefani with No Doubt and Grace Slick with Jefferson Airplane. And I previously mentioned Bjork too.

I did. Loved No Doubt back in the day, and Jefferson Airplane is iconic.
