What's Your Favorite Driving Song?
This Mike's Music Morning is inspired by those rubbish pillocks on Classic Top Gear.
Forgive me if this actually doesn’t post in the morning (my time). Daylight Saving Time and all that.
Yesterday was the absolute best day (for me) to have Classic Top Gear playing in the background….
I got Ryan Reynolds (one of my spirit animals), Michael Fassbender, Matt Smith, and Slash as the “Stars in the Reasonably Priced Car bit”.
Basically, Deadpool, Magneto, Doctor Who, and one of my favorite rock guitarists of all time have all popped up today. I’m not even a car guy, I just think Clarkson, May, and Hammond are a hilarious trio. The cars are just eye candy.
So, I decided to reach out to my partners (both business and marital), and ask about their favorite driving songs. And, away we go!
First, lets acknowledge the Top Gear theme song: “Jessica” from The Allman Brothers Band
I’ll get to mine in a bit. There’s a story.
Now, as I said, I contacted my partners. I love their choices. I have a backstory for mine. Because, of course I do.
First up, one of the greatest songs ever, in my humble opinion. I got to see a stage production of “Tommy” one time in San Diego. I’ve been hooked on The Who ever since.
There’s a strong start with this song, which is important for driving music. Also, I love The Offspring.
I love this next one. I cannot for the life of me remember what movie I heard it in first.
(Editor’s Note: Perhaps the blackjack thriller “21”? I remember it from that.)
Strong start for this one too
That two kids from Indiana love a song about California (where I grew up) is funny to me… Honestly, this was an anthem…
[Editor’s note again: It’s the best track when you’re actually driving to California!]
Okay. So that’s
and covered. Here's my wife's choice (also featured in "Avengers: Endgame")Now, as I said, I have a bit of a backstory to mine. My 80’s and 90’s involved a lot of escapism. Music, books, video games, etc.
Back in ‘94, there was this “virtual reality” arcade in Mission Valley, in San Diego. They had two games, but it was really cool because everyone had this individual pod and played against each other either with BattleMechs or flying/racing across the surface of Mars. Early multiplayer.
I’ve always wanted to be a pilot. It was one of the primary reasons I joined the Navy. I’m not going to talk about that in this post. Anywho, I play flight sims a lot. When I can. I like the sci-fi ones a lot, but the realistic ones are really cool. Seriously, I map the buttons on my joystick. Ok, that sounded wrong.
Anyway, I always loved playing the flying/racing across Mars game. I would go down with my portable CD player (shut up, at least it wasn’t a Walkman) and queued up this song before a race:
