Yes you’re right. He wanted the biggest groups of the day to circulate among other bands and keep exploring new musical frontiers. And even though his compositions had precise parts, he regarded soloing as an adventure where you took the chance of creating something new, possibly hitting the wrong note.
I've always wanted to fly. It was actually one of the primary reasons I joined the Navy. Didn't work out. I play all manner of flight simulators (when I'm not exceptionally busy.)
